About Instruments in the Cloud

Launched in 2015, Instruments in the Cloud is a website designed to get more musical instruments into the hands of students and to empower every person to be a champion for music education in his or her community. This tech solution was created by Vega Productions a nonprofit organization with a mission to support quality music and art education in schools; teachers and administrators from several Minnesota school districts; and Software for Good a Minneapolis-based team of software engineers that partners with nonprofits, benefit corporations, social enterprises, educational institutions, and startups working toward positive social and environmental change.

Why is the need for musical instruments so great?

Widespread budget cuts in schools continue to decimate school arts programs, resulting in a severe shortage of quality instruments and music programs. The school-based music programs of the past are at great risk. Keeping up with the community need has become a serious challenge facing public schools.

While some schools have a bounty of instruments sitting idle, other schools just miles away are in desperate need of those same instruments. Administrators and music teachers need a way to connect and communicate with each other in order to share the instruments they already have.

We created a solution -- but we need your help to keep it going!

To address this issue, Vega Productions collaborated with St. Paul Public Schools, Minneapolis Public Schools and Duluth Public Schools to develop Instruments in the Cloud. This free resource provides an online giving platform to streamline the donation of once-loved but no longer used musical instruments; a wish list feature so that teachers can quickly and easily let their communities know about musical instrument needs in their classrooms; and an instrument inventory management system that helps teachers manage, track, and share instruments.

So what can you do to help?

Please share what you've learned about Instruments in the Cloud with any music educators you know, or donate a used musical instrument to a school music program in need.

Prefer to make a financial contribution? We'd love it if you chose to support Vega Productions in our work for instruments in the cloud.
